Sunderland AFC>Sunderland AFC Managers

Bob Stokoe

Stokoe spent 4 years in charge at Bury between 1961 and 1965 before short spells managing Carlisle and Blackpool. His finest achievement by far occurred during the 1972- 1973 campaign as he led second division club, Sunderland to victory in the 1973 FA Cup final over Leeds United. Two years later he helped Sunderland gain promotion from the second division in to the top flight. He was in charge of Sunderland between 1972 and 1976 for a period of four years.

Lawrie McMenemy

McMenemy is one of the most intelligent men of the game in the history of football. He began his managerial career with Bishop Auckland in the year 1964 before going on to be in charge at Sheffield Wednesday and Grimsby Town. In the year 1976, McMenemy led Southampton to the 1976 FA Cup final and helped them win the final. He helped the Saints gain promotion in the 1977 – 1978 season and reach the league cup final in the year 1979. He spent twelve years in charge of the saints before going on to manage Sunderland. He spent three years in charge of Sunderland before leaving the post in 1987. He was named as assistant manager of England in 1990, leaving the post in 1993. In the year 1998, McMenemy was named as the new man in charge of Northern Ireland, however after an unsuccessful era as manager of the national football team he left the position after they failed to qualify for the 2000 European football championships.

Peter Reid
Peter Reid started his managerial career at Manchester City in November 1990, acting as player- manager. His first year in charge at Main Road was a resounding success as City continued to climb up the table and finished the season off in strong form, finishing in fifth position. He led City through a fine run during the 1991-92 season as they ended the campaign off strongly. Once again during the 1992- 1993 Premier League season, Reid managed City to a respectable 9th position; however he was surprisingly dismissed at the start of the 93-94 season. He made his return into management, in charge at Sunderland in March 1995, a club he would remain as manager for a further 8 years. He left the post in October 2002 due to a poor run of form in the league. Reid later on went in charge o Leeds United and Coventry City.

Mick McCarthy
Managerial period – 1996 – 2002
McCarthy’s period in charge of the Republic of Ireland lasted a total of 6 years. After failing to qualify for world cup 1998 and Euro 2000, he guided them to qualification for the 2002 world cup finals. He enjoyed a decent campaign, as the Irish cruised through the first round, holding Germany to a draw and demolishing Saudi Arabia 3-0 in the process. They only suffered exit in the second round due to a loss in the penalty shoot out against Spain. After a disappointing start to the Euro 2004 qualification campaign he chose to resign from the managerial post. He was installed as the new manager of Sunderland in 2003 and guided them in to the premiership at the end of the 2004 – 2005 season as they finished it off as Championship winners.
